Gas prices change frequently since wholesale prices rely on various factors (such as the cost of fuel). Geopolitical events impact these wholesale prices on a day-to-day basis, and as a result, energy suppliers are frequently adjusting their prices. Below we have the latest business gas prices for the UK to give you a rough idea of what you can expect to pay.

Business gas prices in the UK have declined since 2024 and are now at their lowest price since the rates we saw in 2023.
Energy rates have stabilised significantly over the past few months, prompting many business owners to secure their gas rates in anticipation of potential increases during the approaching colder months.
The graph below illustrates this steady stabilisation compared to gas prices in January 2024.
The main reason to compare and switch business gas suppliers is to secure the best deal for your business, and save money.
Businesses that don’t regularly compare gas prices and switch to a cheaper gas supplier, may find they are overpaying for their gas usage, or their supplier will switch them to the un-advantageous tariffs that are the rollover and the deemed tariff.
Business gas contracts come in the form of fixed and variable contracts. The benefit of a fixed business gas contract is a period of predictable business gas prices regardless of how much wholesale gas prices fluctuate. So, as long as you know how much gas your business uses, you’ll know how much your bill comes to.
If you opt for a variable tariff, you’ll benefit from cheap rates when wholesale gas prices are low. You also risk overpaying when wholesale prices rise unpredictably.
Here are some scenarios where comparing business gas deals is advised:
The last 12 months of business gas contracts are known as the renewal window. During this period, you are allowed to agree to a contract with a different business gas supplier without incurring any penalties. The new contract will kick in on the day your previous contract ends. Once you enter this window, use it to secure a better deal before your contract ends.
If your contract has ended, and you’ve not switched gas suppliers, you will be moved to an out-of-contract rate, which is more expensive than what you were paying before. These are called rollover contracts. Some suppliers may also move you to a deemed contract at the end of your contract. If this is the case, then comparing gas prices is essential to lock in a rate that is preferential to you.
If it’s been several years since you last switched business gas, you may be stuck in a rollover contract or a deemed rate that is expensive compared to wholesale gas prices. In this case, find out if you are in your renewal window, then compare to find a better deal.
If you’ve never switched before you may be paying high rates as any contract you or the previous tenant of your business premises may have had before may have expired. Therefore it's worth checking with your supplier what tariff you are on, and then comparing with other suppliers to see if you can find a better deal.
If your business has taken over premises and you have not informed your previous premises gas supplier of your move, you could find yourself stuck with the old tenant’s tariff, so ensure you perform a gas price comparison and switch for your new business premises.
If your business has moved into a brand-new premise without agreeing to a contract, then you could be on an expensive deemed contract. Deemed contracts are the default rates that business gas meters are subject to upon installation if a contract is not agreed upon beforehand. In this situation compare the business gas price market to find the best deal possible.
By paying attention to the wholesale gas market, you can orchestrate a savvy switch to take advantage of wholesale gas price trends. That could be switching to a long-term fixed contract if signs point to wholesale prices spiking. Or, in a high-risk, high-reward strategy, switch to a variable contract to take advantage of wholesale price lowering. An alternative is to switch to a fixed that takes advantage of lower wholesale prices, securing lower and predictable unit prices.
Maybe you just want the best commercial gas deal possible for your business in a time when every penny counts. Regular switching using a service like Switch Whiz gives you fixed prices that allow you to weather volatility in the wholesale gas market.
When you switch business gas with Switch Whiz, the process is simple. You enter your details in our price comparison engine, view the deals available to you, and select the one you want.
If you choose to go ahead with the switch our in-house energy experts will handle everything for you. You will need to sign a letter of authority that authorises us to contact your old business gas supplier to let them know you are switching at the end of your contract, and it also authorises us to contact your new gas supplier and set up your account with them.
We do all this in the background, so there’s no need for you to do anything further until switching day. On switching day you will need to take a meter reading and send this to your old supplier so they can send you your final bill, and to your new supplier so that they can bill you. On switching day, you will be transferred to your new supplier and they will begin billing your cheaper business gas rates.

MPRN stands for Meter Point Reference Number. You can find it on your gas bill on the front or back of the first page. It is up to 10 digits long.
For each gas service, there is a unique MPRN.
These two steps might seem simple, but they can stop you from incurring costs from whoever moves into your old property. It also stops you from paying out-of-contract rates on the new property. Suppliers use out-of-contract rates for people who use commercial gas without explicitly asking for a certain tariff.
Once you have told your energy supplier about your situation, they will provide you with a Change of Tenancy Letter. The letter will ask for:
To complete the process, you have to give your supplier proof that you are no longer liable for the tenancy. You can choose anything from this list:

The government created the Energy Bills Discount Scheme (EBDS) to provide relief for non-domestic customers in Great Britain and Northern Ireland. This scheme was preceded by the Energy Bill Relief Scheme, which came to an end in March 2023.
The discount is available for businesses and public sector organisations. Schools, hospitals, and more eligible organisations can get a discount on wholesale gas and electricity prices from April 2023 to April 2024.
All brokers and Third Party Intermediaries (TPIs) will handle every aspect of the switch for you. A broker like Switch Whiz will - with your authorisation - contact your old supplier to inform them of your switch, contact your new supplier to set up your account and do any chasing that is required.
Trusted brokers like Switch Whiz have access to exclusive business gas rates that are not available on the market, giving you access to a better business gas deal than going direct.
There are a few ways to know your contract end date for your current business gas deal. You can refer to the original contract you signed with your business gas supplier, or if you inherited a tariff from a previous tenant, then a recent bill will have this information.
If your business is a micro-business, then your supplier is obligated to send you a renewal letter a minimum of three months before your contract end date. This letter will let you know when your contract ends, what tariffs are available to switch to afterwards, and the rates of those tariffs.
If you are moving to a new business premises, you need to let your current supplier know you are moving, so your contract can be migrated to the new premises.
If you don’t, then you will find yourself paying the rates that come with the new premises, which could be very expensive.
If you work with a broker like Switch Whiz, then the broker will contact your supplier for you.
