Business water bills are made up of several charges. On a basic level, water suppliers will charge based on the quantity of clean water used, a standing charge and for the disposal of wastewater.
For many small businesses, they will be charged similarly to how the domestic market is billed. They will receive a bill for the amount of water used plus a standing charge. The standing charge will vary depending on the size and type of meter.
If a business does not have a water meter installed, suppliers will depend on the rateable value of the property.
Many businesses are unaware that wastewater and sewerage charges are billed separately from the water supply. This is typically calculated on the volume of water used and charges known as ‘Trade Effluent’. This is backed by a complex formula known as the Mogden Formula that water companies use that incorporates many variables.
Whilst you will need to enter your business details to get an accurate quote, we have surfed across the internet to find the latest wholesale business water rates for 2023/24.

Never switched business water supply before? You can find out who your local water supplier is here.
Except for switching business water suppliers, you will need to reduce the amount of water you use at your business premises. Sound too time-consuming? We offer free business water audits to those spending over £1,000 annually on water bills. This provides a great view of how your company is consuming water and how you might be able to reduce this usage with some simple changes.
Improving efficiency is great for the bank account and the environment.
Typically our water audits include sanitary checks, drainage, consumption efficiency, sewerage and meters.
Wastewater is a separate charge from your water consumption bill. These are services that are charged separately and your wastewater is typically a fixed charge. Both charges will be listed on your water bill.
You can switch your wastewater service alongside your water suppliers as you look to reduce water and wastewater costs.
A Supply Point Identifier is a unique number that is assigned to your property to ensure you’re getting billed the correct amount.
This is a fixed annual charge based on your meter size and consumption to account for surface water that drains directly into a public sewer.
If there’s no meter at the business premises, there are unmetered tariffs based on estimated business water rates calculated on the rateable value.
You may notice a drop in the water pressure. This could mean you have a leak but you should always check your wholesalers' website to see if any work is being carried out in the area.
Water meter readings are essential for accurate billing and leak detection. Typically, suppliers will take meter readings every six months but it is good practice to take monthly readings yourself to ensure there are no issues.
