The Big Six Energy Suppliers In 2024

The UK energy market has changed substantially over time. In 2010, just six business energy suppliers controlled the entire energy market, but gradually other companies started to make an impact What’s more, the acquisition of npower by E.ON means that as of 2022 the traditional Big Six became a Big Five, although the largest six energy suppliers still share 70% of the UK electricity market.

Whether you choose a Big Six supplier for your business electricity is up to you. You may trust the stability of a larger company more, or prefer the competitive tariffs or customer service that a smaller supplier can provide - although these smaller suppliers can go bust from time to time!

However, challenger energy suppliers are known for offering great customer service whilst still providing some great deals on gas and electricity in comparison to other suppliers on the energy market.

For example, Valda Energy may be a challenger to the business energy sector, compared to heavyweight British Gas, however their business electricity rates are very competitive for business owners.

The current “Big Six” of domestic electricity suppliers is as follows, according to Ofgem's data:

  • British Gas (20.3% market share)
  • E.On (17.4%)
  • Ovo Energy(13.4%)
  • EDF Energy (11.4%)
  • Octopus Energy (11.9)
  • ScottishPower (9.2%)

Business Energy Suppliers for Large Businesses

If you own a large business, the chances are that your energy expenses are through the roof. The consensus is that big businesses have to be with the Big Six suppliers, but the truth is that there are lots of options out there. To find the best business energy suppliers for your needs, you have to compare the market. You can start with our comparison tool, which provides impartial advice to business owners who want to take control of their finances.
